Key Takeaways

  • Lake Hartwell covers nearly 56,000 acres on the South Carolina and Georgia border.
  • Lake Hartwell RV camping options include U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds, state parks, and private full-hookup RV parks.
  • Most lakefront public campgrounds offer water and electric hookups with a dump station, not sewer.
  • A full-hookup RV park near the lake is a better fit for longer stays, big rigs, and Clemson trips.

Lake Hartwell is one of the most visited lakes in the Southeast, and a big reason RVers come to the Clemson area. If you are planning a trip, the big question is whether to camp right on the water or at a full-hookup park nearby.

Both are great choices. This guide compares your options so families, weekend anglers, and long-term RVers can pick the right fit.

About Lake Hartwell

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Hartwell Dam and Lake between 1955 and 1963, where the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers meet to form the Savannah River.

The lake covers nearly 56,000 acres with about 962 miles of shoreline, surrounded by more than 20,000 acres of public land.

Lake Hartwell RV Camping Tips

Book lakefront sites early for summer and holidays, when campgrounds fill fast. Confirm your rig length before you reserve, since site sizes vary at public campgrounds.

Check lake levels before you go, as they can affect ramps and beaches. And if you are visiting in the fall, plan around Clemson home football weekends, when traffic near the lake picks up.
